Sikkim Manipal University of Health, Medical and Technological Sciences, and now it is known as (SMU) Sikkim Manipal University was established in the year 1995 after the mutual alliance between the Manipal Pai Foundation & the Government of Sikkim. In India, it is the first University that came up by offering quality higher education including healthcare facilities to the Students.

This institute has two important campuses that are - the Technology Campus and the other one is Medical Campus. This Institute is recognized by the University Grants Commission(UGC) & Distance Education Council (DCE), and it is also approved by the Government of India(GOI). All the study programs that are offered to the students are approved by some of the highly regulatory bodies like, the Nursing Council of India, All India Council for Technical Education  (AICTE), Indian Association of Physiotherapy, and the Medical Council of India(MCI).

The University has been ranked in many national recognitions and awards it is ranked 51st in Indias Best Multidisciplinary University, and it is positioned number 1 state rank in the category of private engineering institutes, with many more achievements, the institute is excelling in all academia. 

It is known to be the first government-private initiative in this eastern region, the first-ever PPP(Public Private Partnership), delivering quality education to all the students of the northeastern and eastern zone. The Courses that are offered to the students are B.Sc Medical Biotech, B.Sc Nursing, M.Sc Medical Biotech, B.Sc Nursing, BPT, Courses in Arts & Humanities, technological field, and MPT.

The University offers a wide range of courses like medicine, technical, arts, humanities, social sciences, commerce, and many more. The fee for all the courses vary. Students need to pay the fee of the course on semester basis. There are various scholarships that students can apply for. These scholarships are given by the state university, some are also offered by the central government. The state government also offers grants for research-purpose to the students. Also, students can apply for education loans.
